The
Gurney Hood Barking Lot is a citizen-supported community
effort located adjacent to Joe Eakes Park in Kure
Beach. The purpose of the fenced in park is to provide
a safe environment for dogs to play, exercise and
socialize off-leash. |
| The
organization encourages responsible pet ownership
by sponsoring spay/neuter programs and promoting basic
health care for pets. The group also supports the
Pleasure Island Paws program at Carolina Beach Animal
Hospital. A portion of all proceeds raised is donated
to this cause that provides medical care and treatment
for homeless dogs and cats of Pleasure Island and
works to find them homes. The park has not only become
a social place for dogs, but also for their owners.
Many new friends have been made by people as well
as their furry friends. |
| The
park was started by a group of Pleasure Island residents,
and is the result of true hard work, dedication and
perseverance. Thanks in part to a large donation by
longtime Kure Beach resident and dog lover Gurney
Hood, the park's namesake, the park was launched in
just a few short months in summer 2003. |
| Operating
costs are raised entirely through donations by the
community and fund raising events. Plans for the future
include shaded shelter, more trees and landscaping
beautification and, ultimately, expansion. |
Gurney
Hood Barking Lot operates as a non-profit organization.
